Citing Data Shared by Aegis Sciences, CDC Releases Publication Finding

As the COVID-19 Pandemic continues, there is ongoing significant interest regarding vaccine boosters and the duration of immunity after being vaccinated.  Last week, the CDC published findings from a recent study assessing COVID-19 infections and test results during periods where Delta or Omicron cases predominated.  This large study, which included over 70,000 test results and information regarding patient symptoms and vaccination status, was based on testing completed by Aegis Sciences Corporation from samples collected throughout the US at Walgreens locations.

In the fall of 2020, Aegis Sciences Corporation and Walgreens began collaborating to significantly improve access to efficient and reliable diagnostic testing throughout the United States. This led to the availability of Aegis’s real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing in all 50 states and Puerto Rico at more than 5,000 Walgreens stores that provide COVID-19 testing.

The aforementioned study, published in the Journal of American Medical Association, provided significant findings indicating the importance of vaccine boosters related to their protection against the Omicron and Delta variants.  As new variants continue to emerge moving forward, utilizing results compiled through broad testing networks, such as that provided by Aegis and Walgreens, will be key to surveilling viral spread and evaluating effectiveness of the currently available vaccines.
